2026/27
Memberships are now available for the new season which begins on May 1st for our lakes and June 16th for the rivers and drains.
Whilst our fisheries may be closed for a few weeks those of us involved in the running of the club couldn’t be busier, dealing with memberships; working with our bailiffs to make sure they have what they need for small projects over the closed season and taking stock of the state of our venues. We do a lot of work on our venues throughout the year, but at this time of year we also take a step back and consider what we can be doing better. At the moment our focus is on water quality, the many factors that can affect quality and what we can do about it to ensure our venues are in the best state for the fish. Its not just climate that affects the quality of our waters, we also have to consider run off from roads, sewage spills, farming practices, invasive species, overstocking and excessive biomass, abstraction, vegetation and the lack of it, and the amount and quality of bait anglers put into venues.
Its difficult to control any of these factors, but we continually monitor for the likes of dissolved oxygen, ammonia and pH so we can see if anything is out of kilter. We rely on our members to be vigilant and report concerns to us or our colleagues at The Environment Agency – you are our eyes and ears. Think about the bait you use too. Some is better for the fish than others and we will be looking into advice on what baits are best for the waters these days. Many are great for catching fish, but not so good for their health …. food for thought.
